# The Individualistic Concept of the Plant Association

The other flank of the argument Tansley won, and the source of the claim that organisations have no climax community. Against Clements, whose superorganism view held that plant communities were integrated wholes developing through predictable stages toward a proper climax state, Gleason argued that the association is not an organism at all but a coincidence: each species is distributed according to its own tolerances and its own accidents of dispersal, communities are transient overlaps of independently behaving populations, no two stands are identical, and there is no destiny, no maturity, and no natural end state to be helped toward. The vindication took thirty years and came from two directions: gradient analysis in the 1950s showed species distributed individually along environmental continua rather than in bounded communal units, and palaeoecology later showed that after glaciation species migrated at different rates and in different directions, so the communities of the past disassembled and the communities of the present are recent, contingent assemblies rather than ancient integrated wholes. For this corpus the inheritance is double. Analytically, Gleason is the ground under every argument here against stage models and maturity journeys: if ecological succession itself has no fixed stages and no climax, the borrowed grammar of organisational maturity loses its licence at the source. Biographically, he is a study in the cost of dissent: the paper was ignored and its author sidelined for decades, describing himself as an ecological outlaw, and he had largely left ecology for taxonomy by the time the field conceded he was right. The honest caveat is that pure individualism overcorrects: modern community ecology documents real interactions, facilitation, and structure, and settles between Clements and Gleason rather than at either pole. Read with Tansley: Tansley removed the mysticism from the community, Gleason removed the destiny.
