An Introduction to Niche Construction Theory
The clearest short statement of niche construction theory, and the third leg of the substrate frame alongside Darwin's worms and ecosystem engineering. Niche construction is the modification of selective environments by organisms: rather than passively adapting to conditions, organisms actively construct and alter the conditions that then select on themselves and their descendants, an insight the authors trace to Lewontin's 1983 argument that adaptation is a two-way process. The addition that distinguishes it from ecosystem engineering, a distinction this paper draws explicitly, is inheritance: engineering describes the ecological process of habitat modification, while niche construction adds ecological inheritance, the passing on of a modified environment to subsequent generations, so that descendants inherit not only genes but altered worlds, and the feedback loop between organism and environment becomes an evolutionary force. The canonical cases are earthworms (which have altered soil chemistry so thoroughly that they now depend on the soils their ancestors made) and human agriculture (which changed selection pressures on the humans doing it, lactase persistence being the textbook result). For this corpus the transferable claim is precise: an organisation's present members inherit an environment constructed by past members, that inheritance selects for who thrives now, and the inheritance is modifiable, which is what distinguishes tending conditions from managing people. The controversy is real and the paper states it honestly rather than smoothing it over: critics within evolutionary biology argue that standard theory already accommodates these phenomena and that niche construction adds framing rather than mechanism, while proponents place it within an extended evolutionary synthesis, and the dispute remains live.
