# Early-warning signals for critical transitions

The mechanism underneath everything this corpus says about things not degrading gracefully. Scheffer and colleagues review evidence that complex systems approaching a critical threshold give off generic warning signs, generic meaning the signs do not depend on what the system is made of and so appear alike in lakes, climate, markets and populations. The core phenomenon is critical slowing down: as a system nears a tipping point the basin it sits in flattens, so recovery from small knocks takes longer. That slowing shows up in data as three measurable things, rising variance, rising autocorrelation between successive states, and increasing skew. The system starts to wobble before it goes, and the wobble is detectable before the transition it precedes. For a corpus preoccupied with the difference between a signal being present and a signal being noticed, this is the formal statement of the problem. It says the information was there, in the variance rather than in the mean, which is why the dashboard showing a steady average can be technically accurate and completely uninformative right up to the collapse. It also supplies the missing half of Holling: Holling names the basins and thresholds, Scheffer says how you might tell you are approaching one. Applied organisationally, the honest reading is that a team whose ordinary fluctuations are taking longer to settle may be closer to a flip than one whose averages look worse but which bounces back quickly. The critical read is essential here and the field has supplied it. Early warning signals are contested: they can fail entirely for transitions that are noise-induced or rate-induced rather than bifurcation-driven, systems demonstrably do shift with no warning at all, and detecting the signals reliably needs long, dense, well-behaved time series that organisational life rarely provides. Helmich and colleagues, writing in 2024, argue directly that psychology has been too quick to adopt them, and that generic increases in noise get mistaken for specific early warnings. Read it as an account of why systems wobble before they break, and treat any promise to predict organisational collapse from a dashboard as the thing this map keeps warning about.
