Neurotypical Peers are Less Willing to Interact with Those with Autism Based on Thin Slice Judgments

The mechanism study for how non-verbal reading produces exclusion, and the most useful single experiment in this corpus for arguing that the problem sits in the observer rather than the observed. Observers rated autistic and non-autistic adults after exposure lasting seconds. First impressions of the autistic adults were markedly less favourable across nearly every trait judged, formed almost immediately, and did not improve with longer exposure; observers reported less willingness to pursue interaction. The decisive manipulation is the removal of channels. When the same content was presented as a transcript only, with no audio or video, the bias disappeared entirely: judged on what they actually said, autistic participants were rated no differently. It was therefore the reading of voice, face and movement that produced the unfavourable judgement, not the substance of what was communicated. The consequences run through hiring, performance review and everyday inclusion, and the finding has replicated in subsequent work including studies showing the effect is reduced among observers with greater autism knowledge. The caveats are worth carrying: these are thin-slice judgements by unacquainted observers, which is a real social situation (interviews, first meetings) but not the whole of social life, and the design measures observer willingness rather than any interactional outcome.
